Wearing your pyjamas as daywear is nothing new. Kate Moss's most recent collection for Topshop earlier this year included multiple silky pyjama-style tops as blouses, whilst British label Yolke's wide-leg silk trousers would be just as pertinent in the bedroom (in the non-oi oi sense) as they would the pavement.

Equally, French silk label Equipment has been churning out long-line pyjama shirts to wear with wide-leg jeans or as a bikini cover-up for several years now and everyone from Rita Ora to Stella McCartney has been seen in a silky printed matching set of pyjamas, with heels and a slick of lipstick at a fashun event or five.
Now, though, it's time for the lingerie slip: the lace-trimmed nightie that you save for only your most special of bedroom seductions. The type you used to buy from La Senza aged 16 - but really yearned for from Agent Provocateur - that belongs with pom pom mules and the smell of Paris and that you would never dare wear in front of your mum.
Except forget all that romantic nonsense and exit the bedroom: for lace is having its moment in the daylight and the lace-trimmed nightie is the latest piece to be re-branded: it is now to be paired with chunky sandals, biker boots, tailored blazers and plaid shirts. It's gone back to it's grungey, sassy but not at all sexual origins of the 90s, even suitable for running to the newsagent with a chunky knit and ribbed cashmere socks. Rihanna's been seen out and about recently in a high-shine scarlet red shortie version with a plaid shirt and knee-high flat boots and also a bubblegum maxi slip with Converse high-tops and a denim jacket - and both are as downplayed as a lace-trim slip can possibly be.
Channel blogger Berta Bernad (above), whose pale yellow Oysho slip is smartened and streamlined with a black tailored blazer and simple black sandals. Let's not forget (how could we) that autumn is upon us, so in preparation keep the following styling tips in mind: try a lace nightie over flared jeans, or fishnet tights (very Alice Dellal circa 2012 but still great) with a pair of stacked loafers.
In terms of outerwear, throw zip up hoodies, bomber jackets and multi-coloured faux fur over the top. If you want to be supa East London then add a plastic choker. In short, the lace trim nightie will work for day and night - it's just a wonder it took us so long to figure it out.
