Yes, yes, we get it, pink’s a tricky trend. Especially when it’s this kind of pink – read blush. Or, blusssssh – impossible to say without feeling like a lush and a dandy and a lady who lunches.

But we’re not (just) buying into it because Christopher Kane, Giles, Burberry Prorsum et al told us to by putting it all over their AW14 catwalks (that would be too easy). We’re into it because when it’s styled a certain way, it can actually look super refreshing – and right, not just for right now but long into the winter ahead.

So here’s our definitive gif guide to wearing blush pink. In which we very much hope you’ll observe that the looks are way more fun than they are frilly. See? It can be done.

Knot a silky shirt at the waist

This vintage silk pyjama shirt is more 90s grunger than Park Avenue Princess – especially when knotted at the waist, Banarama style. Clash it with a fit and flare skirt and if you’re feeling brave, an oversized duster coat over the top.

Être Cécile is the answer

The supercool London brand Être Cécile rivals Christopher Kane and Alexander Wang in the awesome logo stakes right now. Plus, they’re much more affordable. This glittery tee is a breath of fresh air and enables salmon slacks, potentially for the first time ever, to work on a nubile twentysomething (that’s you, kid!) rather than an OAP. A sweater round the waist and a cute printed clutch bag makes it preppy without being too J Crew catalogue.

Fresh Air Pink T-Shirt, £85, coming soon Être Cécile; Patch Elbow Cardigan, £29.99, H&M; Premium Bonded Peg Leg Trousers, £60, Topshop; Leather Clutch Bag, £135, Bimba Y Lola

Try some faux fur the colour of macaroons

The Fraggle Rock fur coat look has been rendered perfectly in pastels by Gucci this season (and in faux fur by favourites, Shrimps.) Try this more muted, patchwork take on faux fur and keep the look trans-seasonal with flippy button-down skirts and sheer knits.

Faux Fur Coat, £95, coming soon Warehouse; Transparent Striped Sweater, £35.99; Crepe Skirt with Front Buttons, £25.99, both Zara

Think ‘resort} and try a long coat over palazzo pants

All you need is a wide brim hat and a yacht and you’re golden. Or, this pink coat – actually, it’s a belted dress that would totally work as a billowing coat, too – which is a unique way to embrace blush pink. Offset it with some knitted trousers or any kind of bold printed trousers, and belt it so you’re offering a sliver of midriff. Luckily flares are going to be everywhere this autumn. Less cute, more 70s reworked, when paired with this coat dress.
