9 Things That Happened At The Oscars 2018

The 90th Annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday 4 March and, while it was less political than this year's Golden Globes, there were still plenty of talking points on Hollywood's biggest night. As your favourite stars head off to their after parties and you get ready for work (sorry), here's everything you need to know about the ceremony, so it'll seem like you actually stayed awake to watch it.

1. Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologue was heavy on the Harvey Weinstein jokes

In his second turn as Oscars host, Jimmy Kimmel's lengthy opening speech touched on last year's Best Picture mix-up (we're still not over it) and ribbed Timothée Chalamet for his age (he was the youngest Best Actor nominee in almost 80 years at 22). However, it was his comments about Harvey Weinstein and Hollywood's ongoing sexism scandal that really had Twitter talking.

'Oscar is the most beloved and respected man in Hollywood,' said Jimmy, speaking of the golden statue given to the night's winners. 'And there’s a very good reason why. Just look at him. Keeps his hands where you can see them. Never says a rude word and, most importantly, no penis at all. He is literally a statue of limitations. And that’s the kind of men we need more of in this town.'

Jimmy was far from done there, though, adding, 'Here’s how clueless Hollywood is about women. We made a movie called What Women Want and it starred Mel Gibson. Kind of all you need to know. The Academy, as you are no doubt aware, took action last year to expel Harvey Weinstein from their ranks. There were a lot of great nominees, but Harvey deserved it the most. And — oh, that’s nice. That’s very sweet. So, I’m sure he’ll appreciate that applause. The Academy kicked him out and after they did, I was curious, so, I looked it up. You know the only other person to be expelled from the Academy, ever, was a character actor named Carmine Caridi. In 2004, he was kicked out for sharing screeners. Carmine Caridi got the same punishment as Harvey Weinstein for giving his neighbour a copy of Seabiscuit on VHS.'

2. Jennifer Lawrence stole the show – again

She's been nominated four times, won once and made us LOL more times than we can count – and thankfully the 2018 Oscars was no different for Jennifer Lawrence. Get the lowdown on J-Law's wine-drinking, chair-climbing antics here.

3. Lupita Nyong'o and Kumail Nanjiani sent a message to Dreamers

Presenting the award for Production Design, Lupita and Kumail introduced themselves as immigrants (from Kenya and Pakistan respectively) and made a poignant appeal for Dreamers: those who live in America under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, which Donald Trump ended in September 2017.

'Like everyone in this room, and everyone watching at home, we are dreamers,' said Lupita. 'We grew up dreaming of one day working in movies. Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood. And dreams are the foundation of America.'

'And so, to all the dreamers out there, we stand with you,' added Kumail.

4. Tiffany Haddish (probably) had a better night than any of the winners

Not only did the Girls Trip star ace her presenting slot with Maya Rudolph, but she also met her hero, Meryl Streep… and asked her to be her 'mama'. More on that here.

5. Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren were pretty much everything

The two Hollywood legends came together, hand-in-hand, to present the award for Best Actor. 'Jane and I are very, very honoured to have been asked to present together, on Oscar's 90th birthday,' began Dame Helen. 'Yeah, especially when we found out he's older than we are,' quipped Jane, with a wink. 'I mean that's an anomaly here in Hollywood, having an older man with a younger woman,' finished Helen, as the auditorium erupted into laughter. We. Love. These. Ladies.

6. Emma Stone used her presenting slot to make a statement

7. Frances McDormand gave us chills

The Best Actress winner invited all female nominees, from all categories, to stand as she accepted her award. 'I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentleman: inclusion rider,' said Frances, who won for her performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. In case you're wondering, an inclusion rider is a clause actors can put in their contracts if they want to ensure gender and racial equality on film sets.

8. Everyone joked about last year's little mishap

The Academy – and more specifically Best Picture presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty – took the 'if you can't beat them, join them' approach to addressing last year's craziest Oscars moment. Y'know, when they announced La La Land as the winner, when it was actually Moonlight.

'It's so nice seeing you again,' Beatty began. 'Presenting is lovelier the second time around,' joked Dunaway, as the audience gave them a standing ovation. The duo then successfully announced The Shape Of Water as this year's Best Picture and 2017's mistake was all but forgotten.
