Emma Stone Just Pulled A Natalie Portman At The Oscars

"These four men and Greta Gerwig"

Emma Stone presents an award at the 2018 Oscars

Just when we thought the 2018 Oscars were wrapping up, Emma Stone arrived on stage to present the award for Best Director and promptly shook the entire Dolby Theatre. Continuing a conversation started by Natalie Portman at the Golden Globes back in January – when she presented the Best Director award and pointedly said, 'And here are the all-male nominees' – Emma paid homage to the one female director in the running for this year's Academy Award: Greta Gerwig.

'These four men AND GRETA GERWIG created their own masterpieces this year,' said Emma, smiling as she simultaneously acknowledged the Academy for not snubbing Lady Bird director Greta, while still calling them out for a lack of female nominees in the category. Unfortunately Greta didn't walk away with the award – that honour went to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape Of Water – but she did still make history as the first woman nominated in the category with her debut movie.

So thank you, Emma Stone, for drawing attention to Greta's success and giving us one of our favourite moments of this year's Oscars ceremony. Oh, in fact, make that two: this magical moment between her and Jennifer Lawrence is now our reaction GIF for EVERYTHING.
