Since being premiered at a surprise, midnight screening at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January, Jordan Peel’s Get Out has definitely been one of the most talked about films of 2017, for everything from the plot, down to the soundtrack and all the spooky hidden meanings.

Impressively, the film is actually Peel’s first ever shot at directing, and what better time for him to do it that on his own first, full-length feature film? He didn’t do too bad of a job either; Peel’s gotten a number of awards for his top-class directing, the most recent being his Gotham award which he received on Monday.

First released in the UK in March, Get Out has been widely regarded as one of the most original films in Hollywood in recent years, as well as the best black horror movie… ever! Put together with a humble budget of $4.5m, Get Out completely surpassed all expectations by raking in a crazy $254m gross profit at the box office.

Even now, Get Out continues to receive multitudes of rave reviews and praise from critics and audiences alike. The film’s even managed to rack up a bunch of awards along the way too, including a prize for the best screenplay at the Independent Film Awards and now, Empire mag’s film of the year!

Empire’s editor-in-chief, Terri White said in a statement that; '2017 was simply a remarkable year for film - it was particularly notable for its recognition of diversity, with several films that explored the LGBT and African-American experience being critical and commercial hits.'

Yet, despite the stiff competition, Get Out still came out on top beating massive, high-budget films like LaLa Land, Dunkirk and Call Me By Your Name to the top spot.

Here's who else made the cut...
