We're so far into 2017 now that Christmas seems like a distant - and very hazy thanks to the 7732 gallons of Prosecco and ironic Snowballs consumed – memory. If, like me, you didn’t get the memo that dry January was actually a thing this year and not just the usual two-day detox post-NYE, then the first month of the year has probably been a bit of a blur to.
But now that we've all fully regained control of our senses and we've finally got the words of Step Into Christmas (other Christmas songs are available, of course) out of our heads, it's probably time to get in to some new music. New year, new you, new playlist and all that.
Enter Arlissa, a singer-songwriter and YouTube sensation that I'm pretty sure everyone's going to love. Well, you might not, but I've recently become obsessed and like everything else I obsess over (clothes, TV, music, boys, girls who like the boys I like etc.) I immediately need to find out everything about them and then formulate an everything you need to know guide, which I'm now going to share with you. The Guardian described her music as 'Lyrically…heartbreak city' as Arlissa explained: "When I broke up with my first boyfriend, I tried to steer away from writing about it. I wanted to be like Regina Spektor, writing cute, quirky songs, but I couldn't do it. Whenever I tried to write I poured my heart out."
And her new tracks are a bit emosh too. Great, but I recommend having a tissue/sleeve to hand if you tend to make every single song you listen to resonate completely with your whole entire life and every social situation you’ve ever been in. No? Just me?
Heart's Aint Gonna Lie is a personal favourite of mine. It's the kind of track you put when you've been home for the weekend and go an huge night out with all your home mates and completely make a fool of yourself in front of that guy you've low-key been in love with since you were about 16 and then the next day you're ridiculously hungover in a long car journey and you play this song and it kinda reminds you of the love that could have been between you and this guy, but it all came crashing down before your eyes on the Liquid & Envy dance floor last night and a single solitary tear rolls down your cheek your cheek as you gaze out the window and your mum is having a huge go at your for being hungover. You know what I mean?
Yep. Pretty sure that's the vibe Arlissa was going for. But seriously the lyrics and Arlissa's vocals her beautiful and the same can be said for I Surrender and the (slightly) more upbeat Devil & The Deep.
