Oh sure we’ll get a cat they said, cats basically take care of themselves they said. If everyone on the internet’s got one, how hard can it actually be to add one to our already overflowing household?

Don’t get me wrong, cats are the best. Like the actual best. There is no animal in the world that’s better than cats. (Sorry dog lovers, you’ve come to the wrong internet party). But, looking after one isn’t quite as easy as you’d think. Especially if you’re already living in an over-packed house with housemates that are more useless than the cast of Geordie Shore at being together grown up human beings.

But, if you must. If you simply MUST burden yourselves with a cat, here’s a few things to buy that’ll make the whole thing a load easier.

This planning blackboard

Trust me on this – if you live in a house of more than two of you, you’re on the brink of an icy cold war between the lot of you over who cleans the litter tray, who buys the food and who does the feeding. Chances are, it’ll all fall down to one person. This blackboard will serve to minimalise arguments once you write out each housemates’ feline responisbilities. Plus, it peels right off the wall if you’re just renting.

eBay - £12.99

This automatic feeder

There’s always at least someone in the feed the damn cat isn’t there? Erm, no. That’s a negative. You won’t realise how busy your social life is until you come home for the third day in a row to find Tibbles scratching mournfully at his empty bowl, his hate for you and your neglect emanating hotly from his furry little head. This guy might seem a bit expensive but it’s a darn sight better than a dead cat. Just put the food in before you leave for work and set the timer to open the lid at 6PM.

Amazon - £11.30

This litter tray

Been struggling to figure out how to voice your opposition of Kim Jong Un? Let your cat defacate on his face and fight internet censorship at the same time. As part of Hide My Ass’s new campaign The Pussy Cat Riot you can pick up one of these dictator litte trays for just £3. If you’re feeling really flush drop £4500 on the Putin scratching post.

But really, buy this litter tray

Dictator litter trays are a nice idea and all but OMG’s an open litter tray is the worst thing you can ever do if you’re a bit lazy. Because they stick. Absolutely stink. Plus, moggies sometimes like to have a bit of privacy. This one fits in the corner and is on sale.

These litter tray liners

Perhaps the greatest gift God ever gave man. Litter tray liners might not be the fanciest purchase you ever make but when it comes to cats they are most definitely going to be the most useful. Just remove the entire bag when you want to empty the litter tray. Genius.

Tesco - £1
