In films, winter looks glorious. It’s always a snowy scene of ice skating and hot chocolates with rosy cheeks and darling knitwear. Though that reality exists somewhere most of us are watching on as complexion deals with the trials and tribulations of central heating. One minute we’re out in the brisk cold wind, the next we’re sweltering on public transport and all the while our skin is struggling to keep up. As the last of the summer’s tan disappeared months ago, it’s wise to embrace the paler pallor and invest in a few products that make the most of your winter skin. Creams and hydrating balms should be your first port of call, but if you’re struggling to know how to use them, consider these five beauty hacks straight from the brains of Pinterest…

1. Gloss Over

After that Vogue cover, all we want in the world is to have high-shine red lips. Now, Adowa Aboah could get away with those thick dabs of gloss because she was only modelling it for a magazine, but us lot who have to navigate coffee, lunch and air kisses can’t. This ultra moisturised subtly tinted lip is a doable way of latching on to the look in real life. To give it a go, try out By Terry’s cult Baume de Rose Lip Care in Cherry Bomb.

2. ’Tis The Season Of Letting Hair Grow

Though we don’t talk about it, everyone knows that as soon as summer ends us, girls put down the razors for the season. This time, do the same with the tweezers. Let your brows grow as they please. If you have any gaps, consider Eyeko’s excellent coloured brow gel, or Glossier’s clear Boy Brow if you need to keep the flyaway in place.

3. Eyes On The Prize

Glossy lids are all the rage, but our advice is to fake this trend rather than buy into it. In reality, make-up artists have been creating this look with shadow and vaseline, which is all well and good for a photoshoot or a catwalk, but far less appealing when it’s IRL, and your lids feel heavy, sticky and drippy. Instead, invest in one cream and one metallic eyeshadow in the same shade. Start by dabbing the cream colour over your socket and then add the shimmery metallic shadow down the centre of your lid. From far away it will catch the light just like an eye gloss. We’ll be stocking up on RMK’s Ingenious Cream and Powder Eyes to get this look.

4. A Dollop Of Cream

Sad winter skin not only misses the Vitamin D but the hydration that warm summer weather brings. The worst thing you can do (make-up wise) is to add powder to a dehydrated complexion. So, make yourself look more alive with a creamy blusher. Charlotte Tilbury’s Beach Stick is a quick way of grasping back that summer glow.

5. High On Light

Similar to your blusher, a creamy highlighter won’t look cakey on your drier winter skin. Tapping it along the peak of your cheeks and under the arches of your brows will instantly glow up your face. RMS Beauty’s Magic Luminzer’s iridescent shimmer warms the skin and adds a light-catching glow.
