Red High Street Dresses That Could Be Valentino If You Squint

There’s a reason everyone refers to black, not red dresses as a wardrobe staple. It’s because there is no such thing as a simple red dress. Never has been, never will be.

By its very nature, scarlet is the calling card of sirens and politics, the fiery hue is ablaze with danger and confidence. Crimson is the colour of menstruation and valentines day, its the shade that colours Hollywood’s glamorous carpets and *The Handmaid’s Tale’*s fertile prisoners. Its power, desire and love distilled in one bold note. And, in the current mixed-up political climate, this very shade has come into its own. Pushing past the fad for millennial pink, red in all its brash, brave glory has bubbled up as winter’s big trend.

The first clue that everyone would be seeing red this season came during the autumn/winter 2017 catwalk shows. Designers know that when they book models like Kendall Jenner, Gigi or Bella Hadid to walk their runways that it will be pictures of these women that will come to visually define their collections. And, as ever their images did spread like wildfire over the web and magazines from the moment they were clicked on the catwalk. Notably, labels like Max Mara, Fendi, Givenchy and Prada decided unanimously to dress these women all in one notable shade: scarlet. Take it as a sign that red is autumn's fashionable calling card.

Lucky for us, the high street has already clocked the trend and has been finetuning it just in time for us to start geeing up for winter. The likes of ASOS, Topshop and Wharehouse have taken a leaf out of Valentino's design book as above all else he is known for designing reams of elegant red dresses. Just see for yourself...
