I’m a complete makeup tool hoarder. Not by choice I might add, rather out of necessity. I’m constantly on the look out for the tool that will give me that kind of PhotoShop, almost ethereal, skin that I know I shouldn't buy into. But I want.

As a result I've been through every implement for applying foundation from the Beauty Blender, to flat blushes to densely packed kabuki’s. With every aquisition I think I’ve found it, the Holy Grail of makeup application, but then I’ll spot a brush mark or a patch where the foundation has highlighted some dry skin and then I’m right back at square one again.

Now, however, the purpose of my rant: the new Smashbox Telephoto 3-in-1 Face Brush, £39. I spotted this bad boy while on a visit to Estée Lauder HQ a couple of weeks back and it was one of those moments when you think, 'This is so bloody simple! Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?'

Essentially the magic of the Telephoto brush is this: with one customisable tool you can chose between sheer, medium or full coverage foundation and that goes for both liquid and powder formulas.

The brush, to begin with looks quite dense (as it does here in this picture). In this state it’s primed for full coverage application with a liquid foundation fomula – it will buff, blend and all that jazz.

Give the brush a twist and it cleverly releases more bristle length allowing the brush to loosen up a little. This will give you medium coverage with either your pressed powder or liquid foundations.

Now give it another twist and you miraculously have a fuller, longer brush. In this state it’s your go-to brush for dusting over your loose powder.

Told you it was genius. Now if only someone could come up with a mascara wand that does everything too.... Please?
