Animal Attraction: Is Cow Print the New Leopard?

No doubt, leopard print will always have a special place in our hearts. In the form of a fun fur Topshop coat, it saw us through many winters and patterning an Urban Outfitters slip dress it made us feel like Edie Sedgwick. But, there is a burgeoning trend that’s got us thinking, is it time for this old leopard to change its spots?

Flashy, trashy and a lot less exotic, cow print is having a moment on the runways of Paris and London. It’s kitschy and makes us think of the sexy bad taste fashions of Quentin Tarantino’s 1993 classic True Romance. Gleefully over-the-top, it’s a spirited, tongue-in-cheek take on the new cowgirl trend that's sweeping fashion in the form of 10-gallon hats, fringed coats, Western shirts and now cow print.

Jeremy Scott was the first to try out the trend on his autumn winter 16 catwalks. His rhinestone cowgirls wore monochrome printed denim co-ords or tinged pink fuzzy coats and boots in the bold print.

This season, Ashley Williams tailored it into a cropped jacket. And, at Wanda Nylon the pattern took on a sophisticated air as it was tailored into a long-line jacket, ankle boots, a handbag and a full-bodied beret.

Gaby Odiele is a pin-up for this trend. Follow her lead and have a little fun with this wild print by accepting it’s tacky, ‘50s inflected tenor.
