What’s So Wrong With Co-Ordinated Best-Friend Dressing?

We've come a long way since Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in head-to-toe denim

In the past, I’ve joked to my boyfriend that if in some distant future if we were to get married the wedding would have a dress code that included colour guidelines. His nervous laugh barely covered the fact that he knew I wasn’t kidding. For, I strongly believe that group photographs look best not when everyone has the same hemline and style of suit, but when there’s a unified palette. This theory doesn’t stretch only to events, I think anytime you might get snapped it’s worth thinking about what your partner is wearing as much as what you’re planning to put on. And, vice-versa.

We can thank Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake for your scepticism. Back in the early 2000s, which was at best a questionable era for style, the fashion jury ruled that twinning was a by-word for cringe. Conformity was left to girl bands and Jedward. But, then The Kooples came along, and the matchy-match look suddenly didn’t seem quite so galling.

‘We tend to want to fit in with the person we are dating. Yes we are all unique but we want to, as a couple, look united and as if we “fit”.’ Relationship expert Dr Nikki Goldstein told The Huffington Post Australia before adding, ‘so it's only natural that when you're dating someone, even automatically without knowing -- you will start to change your style so that you blend in with them.’

The same can be said for friendships. As slowly, but surely, the coolest couples have been mirroring their ensembles. However, unlike the turn of the millennia celebs. These twinning moments aren’t limited to those romantically entangled as mums and daughters, best friends and sisters make power partners too.

The difference between the coordination now, versus 20-years-ago, is that individually the outfits are good. Separately they stand out, but together their power is doubled. Don't believe me? Take a scroll through the gallery and then tell me otherwise.
