Last season’s wacky denim is giving way to a trend we all know so well. For anyone that grew up in the early 2000s coloured trousers may bring on a case of PTSD, but approach this look with fresh eyes and you’ll see it’s still got a lot to give. For instance, it breathes new life into neutral knits and in many ways it's just as versatile as boring black trousers. Give these five tips a go and see if you don’t agree…

1. Purple Haze

Casting spell of co-ordination means Maria can make sky blue and two shades of burgundy work together. Yes, really. Her kick flares act like a palette cleanser between the royal purple of her blazer and the maroon of her shoes. Shouldn’t work, but does. Proof that anything is possible.

2. Pumpkin Spiced Latte

Embrace your inner basic bitch B and dress like you’ve been drenched in tango. In other words, like Olive, wear your Orangina trews with an equally lurid tangerine top.

3. Raspberry Delight

Add a little sweetness to the strict cut of a tailored blazer with a pink trouser. Camille’s are velvet, which makes them doubly nice. As a side note, look how she’s made this summer’s It bag (i.e. the humble straw basket) work for winter. Nifty.

4. Creature Comforts

A rustic looking wooly knit is the perfect antidote to a bright trouser. Downplay the zing of an orange pair with a neutral coloured jumper, like Jeanette.

5. Green Dream

When in doubt, where one-colour head-to-toe even if it is ludicrously lurid. Naomi shows that acid green pleated trousers are effortless to wear when you have a matching spaghetti strap top. Noted.
