Don’t Have Your Ears Pierced? Here’s Where To Buy Clip-On Earrings If You’re Too Old For Claire’s

Dear Debrief,

Where can I find nice, cheap clip on earrings that are actually for grown-ups? It's either Claire's (who occasionally have decent pairs but mostly just for kids) or super expensive, high fashion type ones! Would love to find some gems as I can't have piercings.

Anya

Dear Anya,

For everyone who thought clip-on earrings were just child play, Anya, you’ll be the one laughing in old age at our droopy, over-stretched lobes. Yeah, those of us who’ve pierced our ears may have the pick of jewellery, but we also have to bear the strain of it.

As the earlobe is the epicentre of statement-making accessories this season, now is the time to fasten on attention-grabbing trinkets. That said, to get the look, you shouldn’t have to face the hoards of school kids at Claire’s.

Really, by now, the internet should have opened us up to more clip-on and magnetic jewellery options, but it hasn’t. The high-end shopping experience caters well to the clip-on crew, presumably because the shopper is a little older and less likely to pay for the pain of a piercing. Labels like Oscar de la Renta and Saint Laurent do a covetable, albeit pricey, line in pierce-free styles. At the other end of the spectrum, it’s less democratic with less brands making costume jewellery for the untouched lobe lot. Using websites like Shopstyle and Lyst that aggregate the whole wide web of options should help you. And, some brands, like Swarovski, Les Néréides and Astley Clarke, have edited sections dedicated to clip earrings. If willing, widen your search to include ear cuffs, which don’t require a meeting with a needle but allow you to make a similar impact. As, sadly there is no hard and fast answer, here is an edit of the best pierce-free style available to buy now…
