The BSF Daredevil Girls, a newly made biker contingent of the Indian Border Security Force made their debut today at the 69th Republic Day Parade.

The celebrations, which take place every year to mark India’s constitution coming into effect, are normally closed by the BSF and the Army daredevils who alternate years. This year it was the BSF’s turn. Instead of riding down the ceremonial boulevard in New Delhi as they had done in previous years, they decided to do something special. So, the all-female motorbike stunt team down showed off their skills on the parade route for the first time.

The group of women, aged between 20 and 31 years old, are also named Seema Bhawani which means “Border Braves”. They got a standing ovation – and enthusiastic applause from President Ram Nath Kovind -- as they performed daring stunts.

At one point, a group in jewel-coloured jumpsuits and pink hats rode down the parade route, four people leaning precariously backwards from each bike, holding hands to form a diamond.

Another wild stunt involved seven people on one bike, with two of them either side of the main rider, strapped and spinning like the arms of a windmill.

The contingent, made up of 113 women from three north-eastern Indian states, had been handpicked in 2016 to form the group. They were led by sub-inspector Stanzin Noryang who apparently had initially been too afraid to ride the bike. “Now, I am confident of doing any stunt on a Royal Enfield Bullet – a very heavy two-wheeler,’ she told India Today. Noryang rode at the head of the parade in an all-white ensemble standing on the bike as she saluted Kovind.

The Daredevil Girls were definitely a hit, with some of the most striking images from the whole Republic Day celebrations showing them balancing, in formation. Go on, girls
