In what is definitely up there as one of the ultimate throwbacks to the early noughties, Lindsay Lohan has requested the reunion of her old party crew. Ahead of her 31st birthday this weekend, Lindsay tweeted Britney Spears and Paris Hilton (and Beyoncé) and invited them to accompany her in Greece.
‘#nicegirls @britnyspears @parishilton come to #mykonos for my birthday this weekend’, Lindsay said. ‘@beyonce you too’.
Let’s get the lolz out of the way first. Lol at Beyoncé being an afterthought here. Obviously, there’s that minor detail of having just given birth to twins. She's not going to make it to Greece, babes. Then there’s the possibility that the Lindsay and Beyonce have ever actually (publically) spent any time together before. I'm sure Bey is invited to hundreds of birthday parties a day. And then there’s the borderline awkward addition of ‘you too’ at the end that poses so many conspiracy fuelling questions – does this mean that Paris doesn’t consider Bey to be a #nicegirl? That'd be silly and mustn't be true. But you can’t deny that if you were the Beyoncé and that’s how you were invited to your friends birthday party, you’d probably linger over the fact that you weren’t just included next to the other two. But, maybe I over analyse…
Then, of course, there’s the fact that Lindsay tweeted it in the first place. It either implies that she doesn’t have any other means of contacting her old pals Paris and Britney anymore, which is actually quite sad, or there’s some genius PR work at play here. But the possibility that many might have failed to consider is that maybe LiLoh is simply using social media the way it was, for the most part, intended to be used all those years ago – connect with friends.
Remember the good old days when 'social media' was barely a term, Twitter felt really exclusive and confined to the safety of your MySpace or Bebo page was the odd shout out to old friends and school pals? When the world was free from #ad, #spon and #I'monlypostingthisbecauseIhaveto.
Before we get ahead of ourselves though, it'd be silly not to acknowledge the tweet Lindsay posted not long after her plea for some extra company on her 31st birthday. She also tweeted (and Instagrammed, but that's been deleted now) Emma Stone to ask if she'd be up for doing another Mean Girls film.
'My birthday #trump tweet - Emma stone.. can we film a movie called "Mean girls 2" together', Lindsay asked. For those of you not in the know (Lindsay included), Mean Girls 2 actually already exists. It came out in 2011 and is obviously not a patch on the original, but it exists nonetheless. Again, this is one of those situations where either Lindsay is adorably trying to connect to loads of really cool people to make really cool things happen, via the Twitter. Or she's trying to fuel another bout of nostalgia-driven cries for a Mean Girls revamp as she desperately tries to reclaim some sort of relevance in 2017 now that it's been confirmed that she's going to be appearing in a new TV series. But I don't buy that. I don't buy it one bit.
So, assuming there's nothing but innocence behind her seemingly out of the blue attempt to recreate one of her infamously messy nights out with her mates from the good old days, and for having one more go at trying to make fetch happen, I say fair play to Lindsay for reminding us that there's more to social media than the otherwise pretty empty posts we're used to seeing from celebrities.
