Last week, Kate Moss’s review of pal George Michael’s latest album did the rounds on the internet. Including a gem that while her husband – The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince – will ruminate on the song’s composition, she’ll reply: ‘I don’t hear that, I just hear George.’ It ended with, ‘I LOVE YOU GEORGE!’ – meaning that people all over social media (journalists, especially) really enjoyed taking the piss out of the model’s bon mots.

However, the review seems to have done the trick, because George scored a number one this weekend. Symphonica, an album of live songs – both covers and six of his own songs, beat Kylie Minogue to the top spot in the charts, and we’re sure he’s very pleased about this – especially considering there aren’t that many new songs, so it’s more about showing off his fantastic voice.

That’s not to denigrate George’s fabulous singing voice, but apart from an interview with The Sun, where he revealed that he no longer smokes weed after his bout of pneumonia a couple of years back, the only big press there’s been around this album release is courtesy of one Kate Moss. Would you really have heard of his album release if it wasn’t for her gushing review?

In the review, Kate explained how her and George’s friendship works. ‘We danced to [Everything She Wants, one of George’s Wham!-era songs] at his house after the London Olympics, when he performed at the closing ceremony. He was doing all the George Michael moves! When I was about 12, I tried to get tickets for Wham! The Final, their last gig. I was on the phone for hours and hours, but I still didn’t get one. I was so upset that I just cried. So when I was dancing with George to Everything She Wants, with him doing all his moves, it made up for all those years of disappointment.’

People can hate all they want, but Kate’s been of some assistance in getting George a number one after a 10-year hiatus (Patience got to number one in 2004, but he said at the time it would be his final album), helping make up for all those years that he wasn’t around. And that’s definitely enough to get her another invite round to party at George’s house. Who’s having the last (non-cannabis-enabled) laugh now?
