So Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s sprog (read: daughter) gave an exclusive interview to Rolling Stone where she basically revealed herself to be incredibly cool, open and someone that we’d like to be/be friends with. ‘I don’t really like Nirvana that much,’ she told the mag. ‘Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in. But Territorial Pissings is a fucking great song. And Dumb – I cry everytime I hear that song.’

As well as dropping this bombshell, she also goes on to talk about the mythologising of Kurt ahead of the release of the Kurt Cobain documentary *Montage Of Heck *(of which she’s executive producer), and is refreshingly honest about the whole thing. ‘If Kurt had just been another guy who abandoned his family in the most awful way possible... But he wasn’t. He inspired people to put him on a pedestal, to become St. Kurt.’

Obviously, there’s a lot of emotion surrounding the circumstances in which Kurt died – which she describes as ‘horrific’ – and she talks about the effect that had on her in terms of a family. ‘In reality, if he had lived... I would have had a dad. And that would have been an incredible experience,’ she says. ‘Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him.’

It’s this mythology surrounding Kurt that Montage Of Heck aims to address – having worked closely with Brett Morgen, the director, Frances believes that the documentary is ‘the closest thing to having Kurt tell his own story in his own words’. It comes out in selected cinemas this week, and will air on HBO on 4 May – we can’t wait.
