Get ready for the first of many exciting snippets of Orange Is The New Black news, as we start the countdown to seires three (probably June, ’cos that’s what it was last year). Today, model, VJ and all round megababe Ruby Rose has been confirmed as a new cast member – reportedly as a love interest for Alex and Piper.
Growing up in Australia with a single mum, Ruby’s big break came when she entered a modelling competition back in 2002. Later she auditioned to be an MTV VJ, winning the job by downing 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes. We’d hire her.
Here’s a few more things to know about her.
She’s super inspiring on the subject of depression
Childhood was rough, with visits from what Ruby calls ‘
and smacked you in the face with a pile of manure.’ She’s got some candid advice on the subject for other sufferers though: ‘You are not alone, pick up the phone, grab an animal, grab someone else’s animal, just make sure you address it and give yourself the time and love you need. I leave tomorrow to do exactly that and it’s frightening and I am human, and I am doing it because I know I deserve to be happy just like everyone else does.’
** She’s ‘genderfluid’**
Back in July last year, Ruby released a short filmed called Break Free which shows her transforming from a heavily made up blonde girl to a tattooed man. She said of it, ‘Where straight, gay, bi, trans... body image and identity can be a struggle for us all. This video was made to challenge that status quo. I am very gender fluid and feel like I wake up every day sort of gender neutral.’
**Her fiancé Phoebe Dahl is also pretty damn cool **
Granddaughter of Roald and cousin of Sophia, Phoebe is also the genius mind behind Faircloth Supply, the uber-cool handmade fashion line that donates a uniform to a schoolgirl in Nepal for every item sold. Apparently Ruby asked Phoebe to marry her three times and got rejectected every time, only for Phoebe to break into her house at 6AM to propose with flowers and coffee.
