We can’t always get what we want, even if we’re A list actors going for the same part as Martin Freeman. On The Graham Norton Show, Eddie Redmayne re-enacted his apparently (and demonstrably) disastrous audition for the part of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit franchise and, well, it makes us feel better. Because if Eddie can screw up majorly, then you fucking up at work is pretty much 100% fine.

After studying previous incarnations of Bilbo, and spending ages practising a variety of voices, he arrived at the audition and was told to immediately lose the voice. He then never got a call back, and the part was given to Martin Freeman.

Oh, if only there was an audition tape knocking around... But in the meantime, check out Eddie’s reconstruction of the day’s events – and feel safe in the knowledge that even the guy who played Stephen Hawking in *The (Oscar) Theory of (Oscar Oscar) Everything *(Oscar) can get it wrong.
