New York Magazine Article About A Girl Who’s Dating Her Own Dad Has Totally Blown Our Minds

Apparently Genetic Sexual Attraction is a legit thing. Doesn't make this article any less mind-blowingly weird though...

Some of the grosser of our readers out there might have played the would you rather? Game with 'your mum, or your dad' as the bleak multiple choice answers. But that's the closest any girl would get to actual incest, right?

Wrong. Genetic Sexual Attraction is the fluffy-medical term given to when people related to one another are attracted to each other. This tends to happen when two family members are separated for a long time and, after developing a yearning for each other, meet...and, develop feelings for one another.

One girl with GSA has spoken about her two year relationship with her father, telling New York Magazine: 'Right from the start we were comfortable being so open and close because we are so similar. I’ve never felt this close to anyone'.

The girl has a bit of a tricky history. Conceived at her parents' prom, they broke up while her bipolar mum was pregnant. Once she was born she was sent to live with her great grandparents until she was two. From three to five, she had contact with her dad ('He spoiled me rotten. I had this giant storage tote of Barbie dolls and I had my own Mary-Kate and Ashley bedroom') but after that, her mum told her that her dad didn't want to get in touch.

Up until her teens, she still kept a doll that her dad had given her, but her life was pretty troubled to say the least: her mum remarried ('She had another husband who went crazy and tried to kill her') and had several children, and she developed abandonment issues. 'My abandonment issues really hit when I was a teenager. My mom and my stepfather took a break because they were fighting so much and I cried the entire time he was gone,' she said.

While her peer group was stunted ('most of the kids my age were hooked on heroin, so it was hard to find friends') she had a boyfriend who got another girl pregnant ('she ended up falling asleep with a cigarette in her mouth and their house burned down, so she left town with the kid and never came back') and a girlfriend who would 'sob and read me verses out of the Bible'.

Her mum also kept their house 'like fort Knox, and refused to give the girl access to her own Facebook page. But once she got her password back? She accepted a friend request from her dad. They got talking and discovered that they liked the same things (namely drawing, watching The Simpsons and Big Bang Theory).

Soon after, they arranged to meet. When the girl met her dad after all these years ('I saw him as my dad but then also part of me was like, I’m meeting this guy who I have been talking to over the internet and really connecting with and I find him attractive') After four nights at her dad's girlfriend's place ('He was living with his girlfriend. On the first night he slept on the couch and I slept on the floor, just to make sure that I was okay'), flirting turned to play wrestling turned to the girl losing her virginity ('We discussed whether it was wrong and then we kissed. And then we made out, and then we made love for the first time. That was when I lost my virginity I told him I wanted him to be the first person I made love to').

They swiftly moved out of the girlfriend's place and began dating. The girl says her confidence improved - she had previously been bullied ('I’ve struggled with chronic depression, and I was bullied at school. Mostly my weight and the fact that I wasn’t pretty enough'). They went to prom together ('Didn’t he and your mom conceive you on prom night?' 'Yeah') and are now engaged. Not that they can get married ('I don’t believe you need a piece of paper to prove that you want to be with the person you love'), but there will be a ceremony ('The color scheme is black and purple, and we are both going to wear Converse tennis shoes'). She calls her grandparents 'my fiancé's parents' and they approve of the union. She says that if given he choice to adopt or have kids together, they will. Plus? They're moving to New Jersey where adult incest with consent is legal.

If you're baffled as to what's going on and perhaps think that the relationship is abusive, the girl has this to say to you: 'You’re an adult under the law and you’re able to consent'.

To read the whole thing go to New York Magazine. Yeah, we'll just leave you to muse on that one.
