The Rebrief: Here’s What Happened In April 2014

Some sneaky loser men were discovered – by The Debrief – taking photos of women eating on the tube. Their sport extended to then uploading the images to a dedicated Facebook page. Our story went around the world, and we hope it got people thinking twice before they take photos of strangers to laugh at them.

A Twitter campaign to #BringBackOurGirls was important in raising awareness of terrorism in Nigeria and the plight of young women seeking education in areas of religious extremism. However, the 200 girls who had been kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Nigeria have still not been returned. Terrorist group Boko Haram were behind the kidnappings, and also claimed responsibilities for killing hundreds of people, including in road-side bombings. The Nigerian government is basically petrified to intervene.

Peaches Geldof died, which proved a shock to just about everyone. It later emerged that she’d had drug problems close to the time of her death, and toxicology tests said she died of a heroin overdose with other substances in her system. However, that didn’t stop people suggesting that she was somehow destined to follow in the footsteps of her mother, who died of a heroin overdose in 1999.

Oscar Pistorius took the stand at his trial in Pretoria, South Africa after shooting and killing his then-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013. He sobbed, held his greying head in his hands and vomited in court.

Meanwhile, worldwide anger towards Putin heightened – not only does his government tacitly approve of homophobic attacks, but now his forces had all but invaded Crimea, which was part of Ukraine. Protests ensued, and authorities were accused of torturing activists…
