OK so winter had definitely arrived and we'd dragged our scrunched-up jumpers out from the back of our wardrobes, and then a weird Halloween heatwave struck. Thanks for that, British weather. Basically, it seems that right now you're determined to make sure we're either sweaty and gross or freezing and shivering. Which is always nice.

The solution? Savvy layering. Something that's tricky to pull off but something that Topshop have made a little easier for us all. As this week's instalment of Changing Room Selfies demonstrates.

**Sleeveless Coats Might Just Be Your New BFF **

Sleeveless coats are a lot more useful than you think. They keep your middle warm, but let your arms breathe – no sweltering necessary. Try a belt at your waist to draw in layers and remind the world you have one. A waist that is. Sorry about the security tag. Less chic than the ’60s-vibe suede dress and geo-print top underneath. But, well, at least you know I'm actually in the Changing Room, right?

**Different Fabrics Keep Layering From Looking Dull **

I'll admit a silk shirt, satin duster coat, and sequin-embellished top don't sound like they should all go together. But when you put them with simple black culottes, the glitziness is balanced out by the minimalism. And, well, somehow it works. Plus, bonus: this will take you from at your desk to anywhere but an office by just stripping off the first two layers.

**Recycle That Bralet You Were About To Pack Away **

Don't ditch the bralet you wore all summer – find a super-fine knit polo-neck to wear underneath it – and poof! A whole new look for that whispy bit of lace that you thought was useless. The cape is another invaluable layering tool. Choose a wool one for enough warmth once winter actually shows up for real.

**Blankets: Comfy But Cool, Too **

Burberry started the whole blanket dressing trend – but basically everyone's done it since then. Which is handy because I'm feeling this is a trend you'll want to spend £32 on, not £900. Just keep the rest of your outfit streamlined and in similar colours to avoid looking swamped.

**When In Doubt, Cheat **

If working out which clothes to stack up feels like too much of a faff, then quite simply lie your way to good layering. This top from Topshop looks like a shirt and jumper with magic lace sleeves, but has just one zip. I give you lazy girl layering.
