Poncho, cape, blanket – there’s no doubt that throw-over-anything outerwear is going to assaulting your retinas regardless of whether you like multi-functional picnic blankets or not. Burberry is to blame, with their hugely covetable monogrammed blankets, worn belted over chiffon maxi dresses for their AW14 show in February, though frankly we’d take anything monogrammed that was from Burberry (just a pant or a sock would be great).

Anyhoo, they’re here in all sizes, palettes and price brackets, so we’re going to show you four very different ways to wear ’em.

For the smart soiree

Wear this very grown-up earthy poncho with a sheer embroidered maxi dress – also ultra AW14 – for a fresh take on eveningwear.

Drawstring Waist Lace Midi Dress, £60, Pins & Needles at Urban Outfitters; Blanket Stitch Cape, £35, Topshop; The Goring Shrimp necklace in Rose Gold, £195, Alex Monroe

For hanging out

On those mufti days (aka weekends) try some clashing tartan with a Friends-style sweater. You know what we mean. Rachel Green would’ve totally worn this to do her correspondence.

Trouble-Print Sweatshirt, £155, SEA at MATCHESFASHION.COM; Laundry Check Cigarette Trousers, £42, Topshop; Tartan Faux Fur Trim Cape, £25, River Island at ASOS

For jet-setting

Suuuure summer is done, but you’re off to sunnier climes, yeah? So put on your little tropical floral dress and chuck a super-plain black poncho over the top for the plane. If there is one place that a poncho comes into its element, its in airplane mode.

Botanical Kimono Wrap Dress, £120, Topshop Boutique; Grey Cape, £25, H&M (available in store)

For work

A cosy knit and a button-down skirt is the ideal indie-movie work outfit. Throw a poncho over the top to run from meeting to meeting. Or just to nap under your desk during your lunch break. (Totally legitimate. We asked our Deputy Editor and she even said she’d wake us up at the end of the hour.)

A-Line Cord Skirt in Black, £38, Cooperative at Urban Oufitters; Plain Cape, £22, ASOS
