And yes, we know that's not a word. But you understand where we're going with it...

Plaid, check, tartan – call it what you will... But now’s the time you wanna be wearing it, and do you know why? Because It’s your one-way ticket to looking like you’re all styled up for autumn, even if you’re actually kinda still wearing your summer clothes. Because although you’ve mentally checked out of shorts and slips, you're not quite ready for that winter coat, yet right?

Luckily, as the stylish folk on the Milan street-style scene proved, plaid is your middle man in an indecisive season because while there’s nothing summery about this dark criss-cross pattern – it layers up a treat with your warm weather clothes. Tie a plaid shirt around your waist and that strappy jersey dress you’ve been wearing to death since June will be brought bang up to date. Plus, you’ve got a cover-up at your fingertips to sling on if the sun goes in.

You needn’t be limited to shirts, though – a tartan skirt that you can comfortably wear right with shoes ’n’ socks and a T-shirt – just like the ones that Alexis Mabille did for autumn 2014 – also looks refreshingly un-summer without feeling sweaty.

Convinced? Here’s the best stuff out there to shop right now...

Fitted boyfriend shirt, £29.95, Gap; Plaid pyjamas, £49.50, Hush; Oversized jersey coat, £40, River Island; New Look check-print skort, £17.99, at ASOS, House of Holland plaid tweed 'Coco' skirt, £287.58, at Farfetch
