Bad news, guys. Eventually you’re going to have to do some work at university. Even if you’re only in first year and all you need to do to pass is show up to the odd lecture here and there it might be an idea to get a headstart of figuring out exactly what Aristotle was banging on about when he was talking about syllogism if only to stop you looking like a dick when your evil seminar leader singles you out and puts you on the spot.

Luckily, though, doing work at uni now is a darn sight easier than doing work at university when your parents were around. For starters they had to write entire essays out by hand, by hand. Can you imagine the amount of Tippex you’d have got through? You’d practically have shares in the company. Which would come in handy now it’s basically defunct.

Anyways. You’ve got technology on your side so here’a few apps that’ll make the work part of being a student a whole lot easier.

Acceleread Speed Reading Trainer

If you’re doing English or any other course that requitres you to read a minimum of three TOMES worth of classical novels a week (we heard rumours people doing English at Oxford have to read a book a DAY instead of one every two days – confirm this please, Oxford goers), you’ll appreciate this one. Acceleread isn’t free (more’s the pity) but it is an effective way to ‘dramatically increase your reading speed in 10 days’. You might not enjoy reading any more, but at least you’ll get it done.

Thesaurasize

If you’ve ever tried to use Thesaurus.com on your phone you’ll know the mobile version of the web page is useless to non-existent. Thesaurasize is (free!) and basically serves as your very own method of smartening up your answers in seminars and questions in lectures. Signed, Baby Kangaroo Tribbiani.

Your Univeristy’s App

If you’ve got a cutting-edge uni there’s a very good chance they’ve got their own app for student. Sheffield Hallam’s for instance is your one stop shop for all the information you could possibly need from university email access to hooking you up to a printer in the library. Manchester's similarly has maps and library catalogues on and Southampton's allows to to receive alerts from the university and union so you never miss out on anything.

RefMe

Created by a Leeds University student, Ref Me is probably the most helpful tool you’ll ever possess. Just scan the barcode of the book you’re referencing in your essay and the app will create that fiddly bit you need to put in your bibliography. Score one for mankind.

Self Control

The internet is a wonderful thing. Just look at how much it’s taught us. On the other hand, look at how much time you’ve going to wasted on it. If you’re spending more time on The Debrief than learning your Spanish nouns, it might be time to turn us off (just temporarilyl). Self Controlallows you to block certain websites at for periods of time allowing you to get on with your work.
