A teenage girl in the Indian region of Bihar took justice into her own hands when her uncle tried to rape her for the second time, cutting off his penis with a knife.

The man, who is known as a local tantric, said that the girl was possessed by demons and when ‘performing his cure’ at his house a month ago raped her. The girl did not report the crime to her family at the time. But the next time she was made to go to his house for the tantric ceremony, she went armed with a knife. She recorded their conversation and when he attempted to rape her for a second time, she cut off his dick.

The girl, who is 17 or 18, reported the incident to the village council and when they were ‘unable to resolve the matter’ she went to a police station and reported the crime to female police officers. Meanwhile, her uncle has skipped town and is nowhere to be found.

What is a pleasant surprise is the attitude of the police towards the situation. Instead of charging the girl with a crime, Superintendent AK Singh said: ‘Why should we file a case against her? We should applaud her bravery and courage.’ Damn right.

Rapes frequently go unreported in India, and in more remote villages there are unofficial local councils that do little to assist women and girls who are rape victims.

A 13-year-old girl was recently raped as payback for her brother’s groping offence, and in June, two teenage cousins were raped and murderedafter going to use the loo in an orchard.

The government in India has responded to protests about the high rape rate by introducing harsher punishment for rapists. Which is probablyanother reason a fashion photographer has come under such fire for glamourising the 2012 gang rape that kicked off a wave of protests and calls for reform at India's poor rape record.
