Birkenstocks are having a second wind of a second wind. When they came back last summer – or was it the one before? We could just Google it, but time is cash money – they were rebranded as Cool Shoes rather than Dowdy Eco Shoes (or something similar) and… we've got to confess, we weren't immediately on board. But having seen them now on 100k kids on Instagram, we've almost become convinced.

They're not necessarily the most flattering shoe, but conversations at The Debrief HQ have concluded that they are a necessary bonus to one's wardrobe: firstly, because pool slides slip off your foot, lethally, with almost every step and secondly, because the delicate tie-up leather sandals start to make your foot look like a flat fish after too much trudging.

Try all white

Isn't this good? So good. This is good. A white trench coat, a white dress, white 'stocks – so clean, so delicious and so un-Birkenstockish. This is the way to do them, if you're into that monochrome minimalism that has Instagram drooling with every swipe right now.

Try the new three strap

Oh, these we LIKE. These might be our First Ever Birkenstock purchase. You can buy a pair of the Florida Three Strap, £59.95 here.

Be shoe pals

Look at these guys, all hanging out wearing Birks in a different shade. The orange ones with lime green nail polish are perhaps a little too arresting as a combination, but this is a very friendly shoe scene. Dress your feet, then dress your friends in a most complementary manner – is the moral of this story.

Goes perfectly with a shirt and Panama hat

Forget all this pencil skirt and duster coat malarkey that has seen Birkenstocks in their most regular form, go scruffy and holiday mode-ish, like blogger Lucy Williams in France. A men's button-down shirt and a big Panama hat is the perfect way to see out the rest of the summer with your Birks.

Rose gold goddess

Ah Kate Upton, the ultimate goddess in a sea green maxi dress and rose gold Birks. But seriously, rose gold flats with a green dress? Delicious colours. The colours Puck would wear in the Shakespearean forest. Want.
