You know when you show up at a dinner party with a half-drunk bottle of Blossom Hill rose in hand because you couldn't afford to buy anything else? Way to say thank you to the poor girl who's spent all day cooking up a Coq Au Vin recipe she saw on the Come Dine With Me website.

Well, get ready to wave bye bye to those days my friend. Everyone’s favourite budget supermarket, Lidl are, from September 4th going to begin introducing a range of very swanky French wines – for a price that you can actually afford. Hooray!

Not only does this mean you don’t have to fork out a bundle to buy nice wine, it also means that you don’t even have to know anything about wine at all, bar the fact that you need to go to Lidl for it - which is handy, since as we've previously discussed, we barely know our sauvignon from our pinot.

Here’s some of the best (and cheapest!) bottles they're going to have on offer.

Languedoc-Roussillon, Pays d'Oc Cabernet Sauvignon Bouchard 2013 £4.99

A sassy match for lamb and other red meats, and, apparently pizzas(!) so hooray for Hollywood, Dominos it is. Liquorice and strawberry can also be tasted.

Côtes de Gascogne Sauvignon Blanc L'Escargot 2013 £4.99

This one sounds like it’ll be right up our street. Apparently it’s ‘intensely flavoured yet dry’ and there are overtones of citrusy lime. Put down the soda water guys, spritzers are off the table with this one. We’ll take it straight up like a real lady thank you very much.

Sauternes Cuvee d'Exception le Tertre du Lys D'Or 2006 Bordeaux £7.99

A white that apparently goes great with rich fish like salmon or tuna, shellfish and sweet desserts. Fancy bottle too, which always adds to the 'wow' factor when you hand it over because, let's face it, your mates are as clueless about wine as you are. It’s also apparently got tonnes of honey, apricot and sweet honey melon. Yum.

2008 Haut-Medoc Sociando-Mallet £23.99

A little bit more pricey (for when you’re wanting to impress or you’re still in that mad post-payday weirdness where you think you’re a billionaire) this guy hails from the Sociando-Mallet vineyard in Haut Medoc. The 2008 number has been described as ‘fruity and textured, light, meaty, tasty and pleasant’.
