How To Do Nude – Without Looking Nude

It's the best shade of beige on the market - and it's trending right now. But that doesn't make it any less tricky Artwork by Beth Hoeckel

We can’t say that we’ve statistically been a massive fan of ‘beige’ as a shade. Anything putty-coloured brings to mind those crinoline slacks that your geography teacher wore. And taupe? Taupe should be illegal for a woman under a certain age. Your younger years are not for taupe, Debriefers!

Except for now they kinda are. Because in the trendy segment of the colour wheel has firmly landed ‘nude’. Yup, clothing the exact colour of your skin (unless you’re anything other than Caucasian of course – let’s just point out the defincies behind the term) is currently having a riot – like it previously did in 2010 and also 2012 because fashion’s real cyclical like that!

From swimsuits to sweaters to trench coats, it’s a Celine-style of minimalism – like Sharon Stone for the millennial – with an almost preppy Michael Kors twist. Take your cue from the magnificient Margaret Zhang, who stops it all from looking too preppy with grey thigh-high boots and reflective green sunglasses.

Of course, nude tonal blocking is probably too much for most of you. So start singular: try a silk shirt, or even some ribbed nude socks with some slides or sneaks, for that ‘anti-sexy sexy thing’ that we’re so into right now.

Wear your best birthday suit with snippets of white – a nude sweater with a white shirt, for example – or try a nude bathing suit (so fricking sassy) with your beach-side denims. Nude courts, meanwhile, can be insanely flattering, but obviously pass on those if you’ve got the fear about looking too Middletonian. It’s a very fine line.
