You thought it was steady and staid and dull, right? But this season’s shirt dress is anything but. Not only has it been re-imagined in denim, check, with dramatic side splits (bravo, Alexa’s favourite store Reformation) or with utility overtones, it’s also ripe ground for unique styling tips. Try some of these ideas for size.

1. Cinch your neck with a ribbon

French model Marine Deleeuw is the hottest new name in modelling – and not just because of her bushy brows and adorable mole. She’s also got an innate fashion sense much like Scandi super Caroline Brasch-Nielsen. She’s also a fan of the shirt dress. She paired a stripey one with a bomber and a pair of Nike Blazes and, as seen here, with brogues and a ribbon around the neck. The ribbon is everything. Try a black velvet one.

2. Try a statement one

Brit model Adwoa Aboah is one cool chick. Her statement shirt dress – pinstripes, large buttons, flared three-quarter length sleeves and a sash waist – works well with minimal accessories, chunky black boots and a bun.

3. Add a choker

Obviously Leandra Medine knows a thing or two about accessorising (this is the gal that invented the phrase ‘arm party’.) A plain white silk shirt dress is made a whole lot cooler with rolled up sleeves (always roll up the sleeves), some round sunglasses and a gnashed teeth choker. Oh how we wish we could afford Annelise Michelson's Carnivore Choker. Everything would be badder (and therefore better) with this guy.

4. Ditch the sleeves

How minimally clean and glorious does this model look in a plain sleeveless shirt dress, unbuttoned low? It’s not remotely mumsy and is fuss-free without being dull.

5. Whack a sweater over the top

Change the vibe with a little woolly sweater over the top of your shirt dress. Let the lapels poke out the top and the tails out the bottom. Lovely.
