Don’t freak out. We get it. On paper, socks with sandals or heels sounds terrifying, unflattering, polarising – weird, really. But it’s actually just about adding a quirkily practical note to your outfit. Plus, it will very helpfully stop your shoes from getting stinky. Let’s be honest – pongy feet stopped being acceptable when you were about 14.
Here are four unique ways to try it, without looking like you’re just trying to mirror Alexa in chunky platforms and ribbed ankle socks. Ie, like everyone else.

But we can hardly deny her excellent sock-wearing existence when it comes to chunky sandals and ankle socks. Riff on a kitsch note though with some frilly floral ankle socks. Think of them as your ironic spin on the 90s. (Side note: the kids’ section of high street department store will always have better frilly schoolgirl ankle socks. For, er, obvious reasons.)

The lady look
We’re not even massive fans of ‘beige’ dressing and we still love this. Who can resist a beige cashmere rib sock (Falke are expensive, but these socks are heaven), that clashes perfectly with grey mules. The whole effect is a bit like a bowl of porridge, but much, much better. Though similarly comforting.

The feet looking for funtimes
It’s summer (almost) and no-one takes anyone seriously in summer. Get on board with fun feet by putting some electric blue courts with socks with flamingos on. Yes, a flamingo. They are the most majestically fun species of animal.

Keep it clean with monochromatic sports
You’ll be seeing a lot of this one this summer. Athletic socks – the Adidas three-stripe, the Nike tick, Huf's version with marijuana leaves – are being paired with a heel, for that practical hi-lo contrast. Given the thickness of the sock, it can be hard to fit it into a narrow-fit court, so try a chunkier lace-up style, which allows the sock (and your foot?) to breathe.
