A teenage girl in the US was fatally stabbed after turning down an invitation to attend junior prom with her 15-year-old classmate, who was reportedly her ex-boyfriend.

Maren Sanchez was allegedly attacked in the hallway of her Connecticut high school by Chris Plaskon, who pushed her down a flight of stairs, choked her and then stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife.

The attack happened at the start of the school day on Friday, in front of many of Sanchez’s friends, who are understandably traumatised. All students were sent home around 9am.

Plaskon is currently being held at a medical facility for a 15-day psychiatric evaluation. He was charged as a juvenile offender but will likely be tried as an adult, according to New York Magazine.

He was apparently not considered a violent student, and many classmates said he seemed like an average person.

The prom, scheduled for Friday night, was cancelled. Sanchez’s friends took her prom dress to a beach where they took photos and released balloons.
