She came out on Valentine’s Day with a speech at a youth LGBT conference, and had even come out privately to her parents eight years ago, but Ellen Page has revealed she actually previously felt guilty and awkward around gay people, simply because she felt guilty about hiding her sexuality.

Speaking to Flare Magazine, she said: ‘I still felt scared about people knowing. I felt awkward around gay people; I felt guilty for not being myself.'

Even when she had accepted being gay, Page says things weren’t clear in her head. ‘You think you’re in a place where you’re all I’m thrilled to be gay, I have no issues about being gay anymore, I don’t feel shame about being gay, but you actually do. You’re just not fully aware of it.’

'The more time went by, the more something just happened, an "Oh my god – I want to love someone freely and walk down the street and hold my girlfriend’s hand,"’ she told the magazine. Currently single, Page says she will never discuss former relationships but says she will ‘always be happy to talk about being gay.’

It’s not just her personal life that’s making her happy now, though, it’s being able to attend Hollywood events as an openly gay actress, and not having to don frocks that she feels mega-awkward wearing. She attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party in a Saint Laurent tuxedo and feeling 100% herself: ‘I felt happy and confident and the difference was huge.’
