Here's what happened in The Debrief office when I suggested writing about corsets.
'So Moulin Rouge circa 2001...' they said.
Then I mentioned that no, this trend was specifically about wearing corsets over T-shirts or shirts.
'FFS, but didn't Lindsay Lohan do that...' they said, again.
So I instagrammed me wearing one. It got a solid response, thanks.
And it's a good job there's some love out there for the trend because it's making a comeback.
It started at the Theyskens Theory show in New York last season, but we took a little bit more convincing. Then Olivia Palermo did it in real life by turning her bandeau cocktail dress into a corset, by wearing it with a dress shirt and statement necklace underneath. And now this editorial look from Costume Magazine has just become one of the most repinned images on Pinterest of the month - always a clear indication the trend's rising. So is it time to get onboard with what's bound to be the most polarising look of the moment?

If you're game, I say emulate the way blogger Pernille Teisbaek's kept the 'sexy' part of the bustier - with those split-front leather trousers - but casualled it up with a thin jersey poloneck layered underneath. You can also opt for the bustier's boyish alterego, the strapless bandeau, which functions as a very comfortable tubigrip for your midriff. Or, if you've got the balls, US luxury site Moda Operandi's recently departed creative director, Taylor Tomasi Hill, proves that a cut-out leather corset can look ace over a white, rolled-up sleeve tee. As long as one thing is white - a T-shirt, a poloneck or an oxford shirt - and one is black - a bustier, a corset, or a bandeau top - it'll work.
