Sometimes fashion’s weird isn’t it? Like the way we’ve been pining after the very same trainers that we swore we left behind with pearlescent lipbalm and Punky Fish hoodies in 2003 for at least six months now. (Adidas Gazelle Og Li in red, BTW). But now even Karl Lagerfeld’s got into the trainer trend, sending £50k sneakers down the Chanel Couture catwalk, there’s bound to be a whole lot of love for them again. That works for us: here’s the eight trainers we’d like to walk into our wardrobes right now…
Hey, Avril
We love the way Vans and Supergas come in a trillion colourways (we love the animal print Vans and red velvet Man Repeller x Supergas for a bit of variety) but it’s new unisex brand Eytys (pronounced '80s FYI) pair of very covetable chunky leather plimsolls that we really want a pair of.

Welcome back, 1993
The definitive '90s shoe, New Balance were 2013’s shoe of choice for us. Black and navy 420s were/are the failsafe choices, but to stand out from the crowd a bit we also like this season’s new funky coloured 410s worn with some vintage 501s.
The dependable dudes
Nike’s Air Max and Blazers do what they say on the tin: good, solid, suede shoes in every hue under the sun. We love model Marine Deleeuw in her black Nike Blazers and stripy shirt dress, whilst Nike Air Max are the shoe for when you literally can’t even be bothered to put clothes on. Perfect for hangover meanderings, they’re the shoe equivalent of a big squishy burger.

Naff made cool
Adidas Superstar 2s may remind you of Dean Gaffney and Vicky Pollard, but along with Reebok Classics, they’ve shed their naffness. We like the way Scandi blogger Pernille wears her boxfresh white Reeboks with an all-black get-up.

The high street honey
If you’re still not over your stigma about wearing non-branded trainers it’s time to do it. Zara, ASOS and Topshop have done some brilliant classic suede trainers in floral and leopard print. If those are a little too girly for you we love Zara’s block print ones, which look very this-season Celine.
The fugly sneaker
There’s no doubt that the super-light and bendy Nike Free Runs (you can literally squash them into your handbag) are kind of ugly, but they’ve gained notoriety because of how portable and comfortable they are. And the wine-coloured Free Run 2s look ace with a pair of grey jeans.
The retro running trainer
The old school sneak is back. Adidas’s Stan Smith relaunched earlier this year to huge fanfare – the shoe box they built in London's Shoreditch helped – and we love the original lightweight Chinese sneaker brand Feiyue, which have a slightly narrower fit. You can’t go wrong with a good pair of Adidas Gazelles either, which look as good with a frilly ankle sock and a bare leg as they do with jeans.

**The haute trainer **
Ok, so you’re probably not going to spend a shedload of cash on trainers but there’s no harm looking, is there? There's those Chanels, plus Gucci’s monogrammed low-tops and high-tops adorned with neon stars are pretty special, as are Jimmy Choo’s black high-tops. And if you’re going there then can we suggest taking some inspiration from Leandra Medine as to how to work artfully grubby Golden Goose plimsolls with the laces tied up around your ankles.
